Southwark Diocesan Board of Education (SDBE) has decided to re-apply to establish Sutton Church of England Secondary School based on the overwhelming demand for a Church of England Secondary School from the community. The feedback received from the Department of Education was that the prior application was very positive and that the SDBE multi-academy trust should consider re-submitting the application. We will therefore re-apply in the spring 2018. We are waiting for new information to be published by the Department to confirm details about the application process and timescales..
Sutton Church of England Secondary School is a proposed 11-19 co-educational school and plans to open from September 2020 with its first intake of Year 7 pupils, and receiving a new intake of Year 7 pupils each year thereafter until the school reaches full capacity.
This new school will be highly inclusive, have a distinctive Christian character and will offer its students the opportunity to grow and develop within a broad and balanced curriculum framework under-pinned by Christian values. Sutton Church of England Secondary School’s proposed curriculum focus will be based on that of its partner school, Saint Cecilia’s School in Wandsworth, which will be Health Sciences and Care Studies.
The proposed school will be state funded by the Department for Education and operated by Southwark Diocesan Board of Education (SDBE) multi-academy trust, alongside its existing family of schools.
You can help make this happen! The plans for Sutton Church of England Secondary School will only become a reality with the support of the community. In our application to the Department for Education, we need to demonstrate the level of support for the school, particularly of parents with child(ren) due to start secondary school from September 2020.

Sutton Church of England Secondary School Application Announcement
The Southwark Diocesan Board of Education submitted an application to establish a new 11-19 co-educational school to the Department for Education in March this year. The school was being proposed to help meet the growing need for additional high quality secondary places in the Sutton area and also to give families additional choice of a high quality education with Christian values and strong pastoral care for their children.
Today the Board received the disappointing news that their application had been unsuccessful. Colin Powell from Southwark Diocesan Board of Education said:
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we have to announce that the Department for Education will not be taking our application further. At this moment we haven’t received any detailed feedback. The support from parents for Sutton CofE Secondary School has been overwhelming and humbling. We know the local community in Sutton are very passionate and care very much about their children and their education and we are very sorry we will not be able to make this vision become a reality. We wish to thank the hundreds of families who really got behind our application, and all those in the community that voiced their support for the School.”
The Department for Education may provide further feedback on the reasons behind their decision and this information will be added to the school’s website at www.suttoncofesecondaryschool.org.uk
If parents have any concerns or questions please contact Colin Powell at Southwark Diocesan Board of Education at firstname.lastname@example.org
We are excited to let you know that Southwark Diocesan Board of Education was interviewed by the Department of Education on Friday 17th June, and we expect to hear if Sutton CofE Secondary School has been approved into the pre-opening phase by September.
We will keep you all updated on our website and Facebook page.
Let’s make our vision a reality We are delighted to announce that our bid for the first Church of England co-educational secondary-phase school in Sutton will be submitted to the Department for Education in spring 2016.
Should our application be approved, Sutton Church of England Secondary School plans to open in September 2020 with six Year 7 classes (180 places) and admit the same number of Year 7 pupils each year thereafter, reaching full capacity of 1,260 pupils when the first students reach Year 13. The school will operate an admissions policy in accordance with the School Admissions Code and will welcome all children of all faiths and none.
Co-educational, non-selective and free to attend, Sutton Church of England Secondary School is being proposed by the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education and will offer a broad and balanced curriculum taught by qualified teachers. The school’s specialism in Health and Science will be enhanced by strong links with the Sutton for Life programme and the local cancer hub, and students will also benefit from an extended school day, excellent pastoral care and a wide range of enrichment opportunities.
We need to demonstrate support from the local community to make this happen.
